- ¼ cup (60 ml) milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Decoration

- Fresh berries
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Prepare the Oven and Pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease two 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
This will make it much easier to remove the cakes after baking.
2. Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together:
- Flour
- Cocoa powder
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
- Salt
Add the sugar and whisk everything together until evenly combined.
Sifting the cocoa powder helps prevent lumps and gives the cake a smoother texture.
3. Add the Wet Ingredients
Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
Mix until everything is well combined and the batter becomes smooth.
Don’t worry if the batter looks relatively thin. This is exactly what you want for this style of moist chocolate cake.
4. Add the Warm Water or Coffee
Slowly pour in the warm water or freshly brewed coffee while mixing.
Mix gently until the batter is completely smooth.
If using coffee, you won’t get a strong coffee flavor. Instead, the coffee helps enhance the chocolate flavor and makes the cake taste richer.
5. Divide the Batter
Pour the chocolate batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
Tap the pans gently on the counter once or twice to release any large air bubbles.
6. Bake
Place the pans in the preheated oven.
Bake for approximately 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
Avoid overbaking because this can make the chocolate cake dry.
7. Cool the Cakes
Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in their pans for approximately 10 minutes.
Carefully remove the cakes from the pans and place them on a wire rack.
Allow them to cool completely before adding the frosting.
Important: The cake should be completely cool before frosting, otherwise the frosting can melt.
🍫 Chocolate Frosting
8. Melt the Chocolate
Place the chopped semi-sweet chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
Melt it gently over a pot of barely simmering water, stirring occasionally.
You can also melt it carefully in the microwave in short intervals.
Once melted, set it aside and allow it to cool slightly.
9. Beat the Butter
Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl.
Beat for approximately 2–3 minutes, until it becomes light and creamy.
Gradually add the powdered sugar and continue beating until smooth.
10. Add Chocolate and Milk
Pour the slightly cooled melted chocolate into the butter mixture.
Add the vanilla extract and milk.
Beat everything together until the frosting becomes smooth, creamy, rich, and glossy.
If the frosting is too thick, add a small amount of milk.
If it is too soft, add a little more powdered sugar.
🎂 Assemble the Cake
11. Add the First Layer
Place one completely cooled chocolate cake layer onto a serving plate.
Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting over the top.
Use a spatula to spread it evenly.
12. Add the Second Layer
Place the second cake layer on top.
Gently press it down so the cake layers sit evenly.
Cover the top with the remaining chocolate frosting.
For a rustic look, allow some frosting to gently drip over the edges.
For a smoother finish, use an offset spatula to spread the frosting around the entire cake.
🍫 Decoration
Finish the cake with chocolate curls or chocolate shavings, just like the cake shown in your photo.
You can also add:
- Mini chocolate chips
- Chocolate sprinkles
- Fresh strawberries
- Raspberries
- A light dusting of cocoa powder
For an elegant presentation, keep the decoration simple and let the glossy chocolate frosting be the star.
😋 Serving
Allow the finished cake to rest for 20–30 minutes before slicing.
Use a sharp knife to cut through the soft chocolate layers and creamy frosting.
Serve at room temperature with:
- ☕ Coffee
- 🥛 Milk
- 🍵 Tea
- 🍓 Fresh berries
- 🍦 Vanilla ice cream
The result is a deeply chocolatey, soft, moist cake with a rich and silky frosting in every bite.
